HPA Gaucho International Polo 2012

I was at the 02 Arena last night for the second International Arena Polo match. England IG Index (Capt. Jamie Morrison) v Merchant Hub Argentina (Capt. Nacho Figueras), plus an earlier Ireland v Scotland game. Unfortunately the initial positions allocated to photographers were not as good as I’d hoped, however after a few discussions, I did manage to get to a better spot, albeit slightly cramped! Oh, and after a 15 all score, England won on penalties.

Warning! Camera geek bit….Lack of light is always going to be a problem at the 02 Arena, but upping the ISO to 3200 on the Nikon D3s seems to have dealt with it easily. I’m still not sure of the best way to shoot Arena Polo, currently I use two bodies one with a 70-200mm f2.8 and the other with a 300mm f2.8. The zoom just isn’t quite long enough, which is when the 300mm comes in, but it does mean having to change over pretty swiftly, and there’s always the chance that’s when the shot you want happens. I’m currently thinking about getting a crop sensor body which will effectively make my 70-200mm into a 105 – 300mm, might be the way forward., apart from how well the crop body would cope with the high ISO required when indoors.

My main gallery, of all the images from the event, can be found  HPA Gaucho International Polo Photo Gallery

And here’s a small selection……
